SHOWCASE SERIES

Tapp's Music - Sidewalk Showcase - Saturday, January 19, 2013

This show was pure excitement! The follow-up to our previous large-scale concert, back in March of 2012, this Sidewalk Showcase featured five of our veteran student-performers: Evan Larson (bass), Rogee Rogers (guitar), Carter Slocum (guitar), Christian Thompson (guitar & percussion), Richard Young (guitar) - and introduced five newcomers to the series: Cody Clark (bass), Hailee Hinds (guitar & vocals), Amaris Martinez (vocals), Victoria Rabonza (bass), Ryan Sinclair (guitar). The song selections display an impressive variety of styles - quite a few of the tunes were selected by the students themselves - and really show-off the students' capabilities, not only as ensemble performers, but as skilled soloists! Listen to Rogee Rogers' raw energy as he solos in the U2/B.B.King collaboration "When Love Comes To Town" - Rogee hand-picked this number for the concert and we were fortunate to capture his performances from each of the two shows we did that day. The students give a brilliant ensemble performance in Sting's 5/4 classic "Seven Days" (chosen for the concert by bassist Evan Larson), offering a sophisticated blend of guitar effects, technique, and timing. Vocalist Amaris Martinez gives a stunning, emotionally-rich delivery of Adele's hauntingly beautiful ballad "Turning Tables" - Amaris selected this song for the concert from among her personal favorites, and she will also be featured in her own Solo Showcase later this year!

We had a great crowd of family and friends in attendance and the weather was perfect! A very special Thank You to Eric Larson (Evan's dad) and Julio Barrios for capturing the photos and video footage of the show, Dana Tapp (owner of Tapp's Music) for preparing the venue and supplying the sound equipment, and C.J. Moffit for being our sound wizard - You guys rock!!

Tapp's Music - Part 2 of the Show!

Welcome to Part 2 of the show! The second half of our concert features a lot of dazzling guitar work, including re-creations of some of the most memorable guitar solos of all time. Richard Young (our resident Jimi Hendrix expert) opens this half of the show with his faithful rendition of Hendrix's mind-tripping classic "Castles Made Of Sand" and even manages the backwards guitar riffs during the solo section! Check out Carter Slocum's amazing line-by-line re-creation of Eric Clapton's legendary solo from Cream's classic, 1968 live performance of "Crossroads" - It will be a long time before you hear anyone else bold enough to tackle this solo and skilled enough to pull it off! And listen to Christian Thompson's exciting solo work in Pink Floyd's classic power-ballad "Comfortably Numb", performed during the finale portion of the show - Christian copies many of David Gilmour's signature lines and adds plenty of fire of his own, especially during the extended end section! Each of these three highlight selections was hand-picked for the concert by the student performer featured in that selection. You won't leave hungry after you feast on the awesome talent in this show, but, if you still have some room left, go back to Part 1 and grab some seconds!
